WHAT THE NORTH NEEDS TO GET MOVING?
WE NEED TO CONNECT THE NORTH’s PEOPLE AND PLACES WITH WORLD CLASS TRANSPORT IF WE ARE GOING TO UNLOCK GROWTH
The Pan-Northern Westminster Group - The North’s Regional APPGs, Greater Manchester, Liverpool City Region, and Yorkshire and North Lincoln APPGs - are calling for urgent investment in East West, high speed connectivity and infrastructure and making the case for Northern Powerhouse Rail.
Former Rail Minister, Huw Merriman, Chair of Liverpool - Manchester Railway Board, Lord McLaughlin Chair of Transport for the North - Greater Manchester APPG, Jo Platt MP , Mark Sewards MP, Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire APPG, Liverpool City Region APPG, Transpennine Group Upgrade, Northern Powerhouse Partnership, Manchester Airport Group, Atkins Realis, LNER, Transpennine Express - and many more - are coming together to join the dots and drive the message home that the North needs to be turbocharged and connected.
We will hear why investing in East West connectivity - "An Elizabeth Line for the North" is a growth strategy which can't be ignored by the Government.
The North’s great cities, towns and communities need to be connected by fast, reliable, affordable, accessible, greener transport and travel options which connect people and places to opportunities - education, jobs, skills, leisure, health, care and public services.
The Pan-Northern Westminster Group session will look at how to unlock the North’s productivity and prosperity through better transport and greater connectivity.
Gill Morris of Devo North and the Devo Agency, who co-ordinated this pan Northern collaboration and acts as the Secretariat to LCR APPG and GM APPG said,
“A disconnected North is no good for anyone. It certainly isn't good for UK growth or increasing opportunity and prosperity across the North. Investing in East West connectivity - "An Elizabeth Line for the North" is a growth strategy which can't be ignored. All Northern MPs and Peers and the millions who live, work and visit the North know this. One "incident" and the whole system goes into domino effect, with 100s of passengers literally left behind on the platform. As we celebrate nearly 200 years of rail innovation and the first inter-city link between Liverpool to Manchester - it's time to go back to the future and unlock connectivity in the North.
With rumours abound that the Government have got the message that Northern Powerhouse Rail and LIV-MAN Rail and High Speed connectivity would be a game changer, it's time to deliver, deliver, deliver growth and change. Let’s hope the rumours and speculation become a reality.”
Pan-Northern Westminster Group brings together Parliamentarians, local and regional transport leaders from across the North with a united voice on the growing momentum on the need for the north to better connect its People and Places.
